Thousands of years ago, Egypt revealed the principles of numbers to the East. The people of China and India believed that, apart from the planets, they were constantly influenced by certain unseen forces. When they discovered the power of numbers, they became deeply engaged in experimenting with them and realized that this very force shapes human beings. The ancient Syrian nations, however, did not accept that the science of numbers held any significance compared to the science of celestial bodies. They argued, "How can it be possible that different numbers govern a person’s personality throughout a long life?"

Ilm al-Adaad (The Science of Numbers) is one of the oldest and most profound disciplines that deals with the hidden meanings, energies, and influences of numbers.
Allah Almighty mentions the significance of numbers and calculations in the Holy Quran:
وَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ

According to renowned books and authentic scholars, the word "Jafr" is an abbreviation of "Ja’far", referring to Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (علیہ السلام)—the leader of the pious and master of the saints. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (علیہ السلام) was a descendant of Imam Hussain (علیہ السلام), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the martyr of Karbala. He was born in 80 Hijri and attained martyrdom in 148 Hijri in Madina.
Ilm al-Jafr – The Science of Letters
Ilm al-Jafr is essentially the science of letters, based on the principles of Ilm al-Huruf, and is used to uncover the events of the world. In fact, Ilm al-Jafr is often synonymous with Ilm al-Huruf. It 
In defining Ilm-ul-Huruf, revered spiritual guides, esteemed scholars, and accomplished masters have stated that these twenty-eight letters belong to the Name of the Almighty. The angels glorify Allah, the Exalted, using these names. It is said that when Allah, the Most High, commanded the Pen (قلم) to write everything that would occur until the Day of Judgment, the Pen placed its tip upon the Divine Tablet (Loh-e-Mahfooz), producing a luminous dot. That dot then elongated and became the letter Alif (ا). This is the mystery behind its radiant nature. The name "Allah" also begins with this very letter Alif.
